There were a number of catalyst events that prompted the founding of the Trust and the
investigation into redeveloping Carisbrook or developing a new stadium:
- Carisbrook was not suitable for test matches.
The existing stadium is antiquated, almost dilapidated, and does not compare well with
other modern stadia. It was deemed no longer suitable for international test matches and
the NZRU took the decision in 2005 to allocate a test match elsewhere. While a test match
has been scheduled at Carisbrook for 2008, this is purely in recognition of the progress
made by the Trust on the new multi-purpose stadium. There is also a real chance that the
Highlanders franchise could be lost after 2010 if nothing is done.
- University of Otago has an urgent space requirement.
A new stadium becomes much more attractive if undertaken in association with the
University. Providing University facilities at the stadium site created a real vibrancy
as well as promoting much greater use of the stadium than if it was a standalone development.
- New Zealand hosting the 2011 Rugby World Cup.
The New Zealand Rugby Union won the hosting rights for the Rugby World Cup in 2011. If
Dunedin and the Southern region want to be part of this as well as a share of the
potential $400m in economic benefit, something has to be done to the stadium
infrastructure. The Trust are working hard to complete the stadium within this timeframe,
but it remains a serious challenge.
- Development plans were being progressed to improve sporting infrastructure at Logan
Park. With the stadium being located immediately adjacent, there are some good synergies.
